Read Scripture Sections: 2 Samuel 6:9-23 & 7:1-16
Introduction: The story of the ark’s return to the City of David illustrates some important aspects of praise. David was a man and King very well associated with a lifestyle of praise. Many Christian men and women have fallen away from meaningful praise of God. Men seem to struggle with it more so due to pride and control issues that we have. In this story, David shows us an excellent picture of meaningful praise and worship, that will help us in our personal praise and worship of God.
Initial Attitude:
David feared the Lord (6:9)
He approached the task of recovering the Ark with rejoicing and gladness (6:12)
Worship & Praise:
As they began to move the ark, David offers 2 sacrifices (a bull and a calf) (13)
David danced before the Lord “with all his might” (14)
All of Israel rejoiced with shouts and trumpet blasts (15)
Opposition to Worship:
Michal saw David’s animated worship and despised him in her heart (16)
She was cursed because of it and was barren the rest of her life (23). Ironically, David came home to bless her and the rest of his household, but she met him with despise (20)
Continued Worship:
As they brought the Ark into its tent, David offered more burnt offerings and fellowship offerings (or peace offerings) (17)
David then blessed the people
Results:
The Lord gave David rest from all his enemies (7:1)
The Lord commissions David to build a temple for Him
The Lord establishes an eternal House for David in Heaven (7:12)
God promises that David’s house and kingdom will endure forever (7:16) – Jesus Christ is a descendant of David
Conclusions:
Although we may feel uncomfortable, God loves it when we worship and praise Him.
For David, dancing in front of his nation was the ultimate form of humility and God honored his sacrifice of dignity and royalty (6:21-22). God responds to the humble heart.
Key concept: Our worship and praise are before the Lord (6:21-22); when we realize who God is, all concerns of embarrassment melt away. Despising authentic worship, can be unhealthy!
