“Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!” Psalm 34:8 NKJV
I was at a party the other day. There were many different kinds of foods: fruits and vegetables, chips and dip, desserts, but one dip seemed to stand out more than the rest. It wasn’t anything fancy, just some French onion dip, and it was even still in the jar it came in. But there was something about that dip which seemed to draw you back for more and more. It was just so good; you had to have it! Everyone commented on the dip; how flavorful it was, how good it was with the chips, etc. The only problem was that it ran out so quickly! Near the end, people were sticking their hands down in the jar hoping to get just one more little scoop of that good dip. Some were willing to get their hands dirty, and others flat out didn’t care what it took to get that last bit of dip. Why? Because it tasted so good! They simply couldn’t get enough of it.
If only we hungered for and sought after God the way we go after good food. There were some at the party who didn’t taste the dip; after all, it was only french onion. But once you tasted it, you immediately wanted more. Maybe if we had just one taste of God, we would realize that He truly is good, and we would be willing to do whatever it took to get more of Him.
It is usually up to us to make the first step and choose to taste and see that the Lord is good! I’m reminded of Hebrews 11:6 NKJV: “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” Too often people settle for a 2 dimensional, foggy impression of God when they can have a living revelation of God that penetrates to the very fiber of their being. If we diligently seek God through faith, prayer, worship and Bible study, we will discover God’s truly amazing and extraordinary love, glory, beauty, mercy, strength, passion and many other traits.
Questions for further thought:
What things in your life compete with your devotion to seeking God?
What is your impression of God? What experiences have shaped that impression?
What do you think Jesus meant when he said, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst”? (John 6:35 NKJV)
Prayer:
“Lord God, I believe that you are God and that you are full of love, mercy, goodness, glory and light. I desire to taste and see that you are good and break up any incorrect perceptions of you I may have. I take refuge in you, the living God, today. Please forgive me for the sins I’ve allowed to soil my desire for you. Please wash my conscience from the stain of sinful deeds and renew my hunger and thirst for you. I will diligently seek you daily. Please lead me in discovering your amazing qualities. You are awesome, God, and I praise you today! Thank you! In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”
