“I’m a backsliding Christian, I’m addicted to porn and I need help. Where do I start?”

Please take a moment right now to pray and ask God to open your eyes, ears and heart to the path for freedom from your addiction as you read this page.

I found Romans 8:1-17 to be a great help in understanding how we get free. We have God’s Spirit living in us. The Spirit enables us to put sex addiction to death (Romans 8:11,13) and to live for God, instead of our sinful desires. This is the truth that sets us free (John 8:31-32).

There is a big difference in knowing about the Spirit’s empowerment and believing in it. If you are not confident in your belief that God will help you, please ask God to show you how to start deeply believing and trusting him as you walk to freedom.

I encourage you to work through my Freedom Journey online study to help you break sex addiction and walk with Jesus consistently. It reflects what God has taught me during the years since I became porn-free. Please take time to go through it. It will be challenging to finish, but it will help you in your walk to freedom and your new life in Jesus.

Here are some survival points you can apply right away to your situation:
Meet daily with God: I encourage you to meet with God daily in a “quiet time.” The quiet time will help you tap into God’s restoring power and purify you from the evil you have filled your mind with. To get started, see our Quiet Times page.

Don’t receive condemnation: Don’t allow the devil to make you feel ashamed and suggest that you are beyond forgiveness. The devil triumphs when you start believing that Jesus’ death wasn’t enough to cleanse you from your sin. Please don’t fall for that lie. It’s a ploy to separate you from the only sacrifice that atones for your sin. Jesus paid for ALL your sins on the cross. Receive His forgiveness and feel free to approach Him whenever you need help.

Fight temptations: You will need God’s strength to fight temptations and you can ask him to strengthen you for the battles. If you are relying on your own strength instead of God’s, you will fail. It is by the Spirit that we kill the sinful deeds of the body (Romans 8:13). Likewise, we extinguish the fires of lust by starving them of whatever we have been feeding them (ex. porn and other sex sins). God will grow self-control in you where there wasn’t any before (Galatians 5:22-23). As that self control grows, God will teach you how to break lust’s grip. Visit our Overcoming Temptation’s Study for more info.

Learn the Word: The Bible contains the promises of God that you can stand on in faith to walk to freedom (2 Corinthians 7:1). You can’t stand on the promises if you don’t know them. Your daily quiet time with God will help you learn the promises in scripture. See our Quiet Times page and Sword of the Spirit for more info.

Remember that God loves you passionately and will be with you on this journey to freedom. Please believe in God for your healing and walk toward him each day. Our sex addiction main info page has many links that may prove helpful to you as you move forward.
